The Power of Teamwork

On the occasion of the upcoming training trip to Vietnam by Mr. Reggie Carney, one of the world's leading instructors of John C. Maxwell's programs called “The Laws of Teamwork” (Roughly translated as “The rules of fast teamwork”) Marketing \/Viet Nam Magazine has received a short article by Mr. John C. Maxwell himself about the secret of teamwork. The magazine would like to translate the article to help readers understand more about this resource in the business.

Famous as a master in the art of leadership and effective work, but few people know that it was not until the age of 40 that John C. Maxwell realized the full value of teamwork? Since then, he has published two books sharing about this issue, namely “21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” (The 21 Irrefutable Laws of leadership) and “17 Immutable Laws of Teamwork” (The 17 Indisfutable Laws of Teamwork). Indeed, everyone agrees that “three trees together make a mountain”, but the problem is that not everyone can work effectively in a team. There are people who think that “if I am good, I can still succeed without working with anyone”? That is what Maxwell discovered to be “completely wrong”, when he entered his 40s.

At the age of 40, thinking back on the path he had taken, John C. Maxwell realized that he had worked very hard, seriously and could be said to have helped many people. But what he had achieved still did not satisfy him, he felt as if something was still missing. And then, Maxwell realized that he had only focused on developing his own abilities, but had not developed the abilities of a working group. Meanwhile, a person's success is not measured by the number of awards or gifts he received, nor by his talent or the opportunities he had. It lies in how effectively he can develop his working group.

Maxwell mentioned a law that can change a person's life in his book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” – that is the “law of the circle of influence”. The law can be rephrased as follows: the people closest to you will determine the level of your success. And he did exactly what he wrote, the number one priority at that time was to develop an effective working group.

To this day – more than 20 years later – Maxwell's time and effort are still invested primarily in this work more than anything else.

The results, as he shared, were “worth the effort,” and Maxwell summarized them in the following concise points:

  • Teams make you better than you are alone no matter how talented you are.
  • Groups help you increase your self-worth.
  • Teams enable you to do your best work, most effectively. Because each team member complements each other's abilities, and each person can focus on what they do best.
  • Teams help you understand each member's strengths, helping them succeed in doing what they are passionate about.
  • The group creates friendship among members and helps each person achieve their dreams, even achieve more than they expected.
  • Teams help members have a vision and work towards achieving a common vision.

John C. Maxwell also affirmed that the explanation for the word TEAM is completely correct: “Together Everyone Achieve More”. In addition, Maxwell also shared how to work effectively in a team in the book “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork” – how to make your “investment” in the team not lead to losses but to the highest profits. And here are 10 key points that determine the outcome of this “deal”:

  • Decide to build a team – start investing in the team.
  • Recruiting the best team can enhance the team's potential.
  • Pay for team development – invest time, energy and money to ensure team growth.
  • Do things together as a team – build mutual relationships within the team.
  • Increase team power with responsibility and privilege – increase leadership among team members.
  • Create belief in team success
  • Create opportunities and challenges for the team – help the team to try harder and be stronger – enhance the team's will and fighting spirit
  • Track how your team investments are performing – to see if you're investing in the right direction.
  • Stop investing in underperforming team members – eliminating further damage to the team.
  • Give the team the best possible chance to succeed with the right environment and resources – this ensures a high return on investment.

The truth is that if you know how to develop a reasonable and effective working group, the result will not only be that the whole group succeeds in achieving the common goal but each member will be able to exploit their capacity in the best way. You will discover your potential that you may never know when working independently.
